Gold Dredge #8

Gold Dredge #8

Saturday, August 13, 2005. This is a tourist trap north of Fairbanks, where you watch cheesy videos explaining the different ways to mine for gold. This is a giant boat thing that digs into the riverbank with the rusty part you see stuck in the weeds here, dumps the earth into a tumbler, shakes the gold-rich slurry through mercury-filled mats to create gold amalgam. The amalgam is removed every so often, and the gold is then separated from the mercury, which is reused.

It cost $19 each to get into this thing, which does not include gold panning, where they give you a “poke” filled with dirt and some gold flakes that you can “discover,” and costs another $6. Our guide couldn’t answer my questions, like, “How did they know where to mine for gold?,” as evidenced by her hemming and hawing, followed by, “Did that answer your question?” Uh, no.

Don’t go here. Why am I smiling?

This village buys dirt from a nearby village, and runs water through it looking for gold. They were working all morning, and all they found were 2 rocks that had a couple of tiny, tiny specs of gold. Apparently the village is so poor that it's worth it.
